David
Edwin Farmer
SHREVEPORT, LA - It is with overwhelming sorrow that we
announce the passing of this great man. David was born October 22, 1938 in Columbus, Ohio,
and was the beloved only child of Edwin Lodge Farmer and Mary Elizabeth Abbott
Farmer. His family lived in many cities until they settled in Ft. Worth, TX
in his teen years. He graduated from Rice
University with a
Bachelor in Physics. Immediately after graduation he began a long and
distinguished career with IBM. In 1963 he married his first wife. They settled
in Shreveport, LA and had four children. David enjoyed
being a father and took great pride in his children. He attended their many
activities, gave sage advice, and offered them a steady hand and love during
the changes and challenges of life. In 1991 he married the love of his life,
Madelyn Faye Parker. They filled their marriage with travel, good works, and
the company of many dear and wonderful friends.
In 2000, David retired from IBM after 39 years and was finally able to indulge
in his favorite pastime, golf. It was during his retirement that David felt
called to the ministry. He became Minister of Congregational Care at Kings
Highway Christian Church and was ordained in 2001. David was always available
to his congregation, and counseled and supported church members through
countless events, from weddings to baptisms to
funerals. He especially enjoyed the youth program and became honorary
"grandfather" to many children. David and Faye had recently returned
from a trip to Seattle
for a visit with his children where they enjoyed reminiscing, laughter, and
each other's company. He suffered a stroke and passed away on November 10, 2007
with his beloved wife, four children, and church family by his side. He died
rich in love and friendship, and his loss is deeply felt by the many, many
people who love him. David filled his life with giving --- giving to his
family, his friends, and his community with his time. It would be his wish that
all who knew him give of themselves.
David was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Faye Parker
Farmer and four children Kate Swiney and husband
David of Richardson, TX; Beth Farmer Phillips and husband Tom of Seattle, WA;
Mary Farmer Hayes and husband Major Sean Hayes of Dumfries, VA; and John Lodge
Farmer of Prescott, AZ; and seven grandchildren Joseph, Sarah, and Jenna Swiney; Peyton and Garren Hayes;
and Sofie Rose and Livia
Mae Phillips.
It is with gratitude that the family thanks the members of King Highway
Christian Church for the love and support given to us during this difficult
time. A special thank you to Rev. David Brice who never left
the family's side, and Linda Dame and Robin Burgess who guided the family
through many difficult decisions. The family would also like to thank
the doctors and staff at Willis-Knighton Pierremont.
Graveside services will be held November 13 at 1:00pm at Mulhearn Memorial
Park, 623 Hwy 80 East in Monroe.
A celebration of his life will be held on November 14 at Kings Highway
Christian Church in Shreveport.
Family visitation will be at 9:00am followed by a memorial service at 11:00am.

Dame, Robert Dickinson, Paul Dupont, Judge Maury
